At Barneys we believe the Bible is God’s Word and He loves using it to transform our lives! If you’re new to reading the Bible, you might be thinking where do I start? Good question. You might also be thinking, how do I start to hear God speak to me through the Bible? Even better question.
We always recommend that if you’re opening the Bible for the first time that you start with a Gospel. The Gospels are the stories about Jesus’ life. They are called Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, and can be found three quarters of the way through your Bible, in what is called the New Testament.
To start hearing God through his Word, we’d recommend the Discovery Bible Study as the best way to start. It’s really easy, needs no prep, and can be done alone, or with friends.
Choose a story from the Bible (if you’re starting in the Gospels, choose a story about Jesus)
Read the story out loud
Close your Bible (just for a moment) and re-tell the story to each other. This will help you get a feel for what is happening.
Ask and answer the following questions: What does this tell me about God? What does this tell me about people? How does this apply to my life? What am I going to do about it?
Pray and ask God to keep leading you, speaking to you, and transforming you.
